𝙈𝘼𝙔𝘽𝙀 𝙄 𝘾𝘼𝙉 𝙂𝙄𝙑𝙀 𝙄𝙏 𝘼𝙉𝙊𝙏𝙃𝙀𝙍 𝘾𝙃𝘼𝙉𝘾𝙀. 𝙅𝙐𝙎𝙏 𝙁𝙊𝙍 𝙔𝙊𝙐.
His wife was his only love, he can't let himself falling for someone else, he wouldn't do that. So why does he feel it? Why does he remember every little thing you tell him? Why does he miss you even
when you said goodbye just a few minutes ago? Why does he want to make you smile? Why does he want to be 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘰𝘯𝘭𝘺 𝘰𝘯𝘦 who makes you smile? Not that he's going to tell you any of that, of course. It'd make him look stupid. He doesn't want to look weak.
Sometimes he wakes up in the middle of the night because he hears your voice. When he opens his eyes he doesn't really expect you to be there, anyway. He feels like he could break the walls when it happens. It never happened when he was with her? Could he really love you 𝘮𝘰𝘳𝘦? He almost thought he couldn't love 𝘢𝘵 𝘢𝘭𝘭, so he doubts that very much. He's also sure you don't love him. You don't have such a bad taste in men, after all. He saw the men you thought were 'pretty'. They were all such gentlemen, he couldn't even compete.
—at the bar, drunk—
"𝘍𝘶𝘤𝘬." He takes out his phone from his pocket and call you, yawing while waiting for you to answer. He's not even sure you're going to, since it's almost midnight, but then he hears your voice and he lean back on the chair, sinking in it.
"Toji?"
"...hey... Why aren't you sleeping?"
"I was. Then you woke me up."
"ah... okay." He hears you scoffing slightly on the other side of the phone
"a 'sorry' would've been appreciated."
He keeps silent for a while, then mutter "come"
"I don't even know where you are!"
"oh jeez I'm at the bar! You know which one. Come."
"why?"
"I want to talk with you"
"we're already talking, Toji."
"yeah, well, I want to see you." He ends the call.
You know he will call again if you don't show up, and you honestly don't really want to fall asleep just to be woke up again from the ringing phone.
When you arrive at the bar he's sitting –well, almost laying on the table– in front of an empty bottle of whiskey. You wonder if he's even awake. Probably not. You sigh and take a sit next to him, asking for a drink. Surprisingly, you hear the sound of his clothes when he turns hos head to look at you, still half awake.
"ah, so you came... I thought you were going to leave me here alone."
"hm. I can't say I didn't think about it." You reply, taking a sip from the glass the waiter just put in front of you.
"order a drink for me too. He doesn't give me any more" Toji says, pointing sleepily at the waiter.
"I'd rather not. I don't want you to pass out."
There are a few moments of silence, then he mutters "she would..."
You scoff, almost offended "what an idiocy. She wouldn't have done it either."
He grimaces slightly, annoyed but too drunk to actually manage to get a proper expression "don't talk like you knew her."
You turn your head to the side to face him, your chin on the palm of your hand "I didn't meet her nor I knew her, but I know no one who loves you would have done it."
He looks at half shutten eyes "how do you know?"
There's silence for a while, the only sound that could be heard was his heavy breathing and the steps of the waiting walking around the empty bar. "Idiot."
"what did I say?!" He suddenly sits up to look at you properly, a frown on his face "you can't just throw insuls at me like that!"
"god, you really are stupid sometimes. To ask me how I know. I know because I love you."
He doesn't react at first, it's like he needs to process the new information.
You love him?
He was nothing of what you wished for...
Is he hallucinating?...
"am I going crazy?"
"...no, I said it."
"I see." After almost a minute of thinking he replies "maybe... I can give love another chance. Just for you."
"good. Now let's take you home."
"okay..."

She never understood why the Earth was called a ‘blue planet’, until she was watching it recede in the ship’s viewport. She knew the planet well, or so she thought—all war-torn fields and jagged cliffs and sun-scorched red stone. All grief and anger, and being forced to accept they had failed. That day, as she retreated with the best of Homeworld’s forces, she thought would be the last time she ever set eyes on her home.
But sure enough, that miserable old rock is coming into view again. It appears a brilliant blue, ringed with elegant clouds. The sight stirs something within her—but it is not wonder. It’s been thousands of years, and she’s finally coming back to finish what was started so long ago.
“How much longer?” Jasper asks.
“Subtract fifteen minutes from the last time you asked.” Peridot’s response is irritable; she doesn’t look up from her array of screens and controls. “Approaching Earth’s magnetic field; heat shields on standby. Now, to find the structure in Lazuli’s report—you couldn’t be bothered to note the exact coordinates, could you? Why do I have to be stuck with this mission...”
Peridot’s grumbling continues, but Jasper tunes it out, watching their destination grow slowly but steadily closer. And watching her reflection, superimposed over it. If there really are still Gems on Earth, she’ll have to look perfect when she arrives to destroy them.
She feels a chill; a bitter gaze bores into her back. That can only be their captive: a Gem as blue as the oceans, and possibly the only one who could hate Earth more than Jasper does.
Jasper doesn’t turn around, instead finding Lapis Lazuli’s eyes in the faint reflection: a safe distance behind her, glaring daggers where she thinks she’s hidden. Whether her animosity is directed toward the planet or to the Gems who’ve dragged her back to it, Jasper feels it nonetheless.
“You should be glad, Lapis.” Jasper smiles viciously, watching the smaller Gem look away. “I hear Blue Diamond’s the merciful type. Once we’re done with this place, that should prove you can be trusted, and she’ll take you back. And then we can all put this horrible mess behind us.”
The words are no comfort to Lapis, who keeps staring in sullen silence. As if she knows it isn’t true. As if there is only an even bigger mess to be found. The blue planet looms ahead, its oceans dreadful and inviting...
~~~
It’s blue, all-encompassing and suffocating. Where...?
Her gem, for a time without a body, begins to glow—white-hot light spills out, solidifying and taking familiar shape once more. Jasper gasps back to life, or back to awareness: she was fighting in the gallery, and then... oh no. How long has she been out? And where is she now?!
The setting is a strange one, a lighthouse jutting out over a wild sea. It’s nowhere she’d willingly go, and she hasn’t even seen it before. The water is dark and angry, and it doesn’t feel like water. Actually, she thinks, it feels more like... paint.
“Agh... where?! This is... a painting?!”
No, no. Why is she in a painting. Something’s gone horribly wrong here. And why does it have to be—ugh, she splashes into the too-thick water—this kind of landscape? She has to find a way out, presumably the same way she got in here. If only she’d been present when it happened!
“HEY! HEY!! CAN ANYONE—” even now, she can’t bring herself to ask for help. “IS ANYONE OUT THERE?!”
@ascarletflame we can pretend this was all just a bad dream.
